About this deal

Meanwhile, when it comes to pumpkins, the picture is no better. 60% of people who buy pumpkins to carve say they dispose of the inner flesh. Meanwhile, 80% say they don’t consider a pumpkin’s primary purpose as a food item. It is a frightening picture. Beyond food, other organic materials or natural items like hay bales or straw bales are great zero waste Halloween decorations too. At the end of the season, you can compost them or use them as mulch in your gardens to deter weed growth.

Secure the twigs in place using jute twine or natural twine, wrapping it around and tying knots to ensure a stable wreath structure. Venture outdoors and gather an assortment of leaves, choosing a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. Making your own zero waste Halloween decorations from old sheets, clothes, and fabric. Easily turn these into ghosts to hang around the house with a bit of creativity. Having a plastic-free Halloween involves reducing or eliminating the use of single-use plastics in your decorations, costumes, treats, and overall celebration. You can use existing clothing and accessories to create unique costumes or host a costume swap with friends or neighbors. For Halloween, it’s recommended to take an overt approach to this, and find colour schemes and patterns that are clearly resembling the character one is trying to portray. Adding a couple of signature accessories completes the look without excess waste or full costumes that need to be stored during the rest of the year. Utilize Thrift Stores

As I alluded to above, very few Halloween decorations are truly zero waste. I use the term zero waste to describe the guiding principles of making conscious choices about our consumption that significantly reduce the waste we generate (both in our homes and upstream from our purchasing choices). You can read more about my thoughts on zero waste living here: These fabric scrap ghosts not only make adorable decorations but also exemplify the creative reuse of materials in a sustainable Halloween setup!

Optionally, you can paint the outside of the glass bottles in Halloween-themed colors or designs to enhance the visual appeal of the candle holders. For instance, old fabric can become ghost costumes or cloth bunting. Or you can use natural elements like leaves, pumpkins, gourds, pinecones, and twigs for a rustic and zero-waste Halloween theme. If you want something more elaborate, source secondhand and think about getting eco friendly decorations that will last. And of course, if you already have items that you bring out year after year, it’s fine to use these as well. After collecting the leaves, press them to flatten and dry them. (This step is important for ensuring the leaves maintain their shape and color during the crafting process.) Ok, not really. I don’t hate the holiday or get all grumpy about it. But decorating for the holidays doesn’t come naturally to me and feels like a whole lot of work. So instead, I’m an aspirational Halloween decorator. I scour the Internet for amazing Halloween mantels, tablescapes, festive decor ideas, and spooky Halloween displays.

Using cardboard boxes, used kitchen rolls, and plastic bottles to create spooky animals such as bats and spiders. When Halloween is over you can simply recycle these materials as normal.

Don’t spare any piece of the pumpkin

So, what can we do about it? Not all Halloween decorations have a negative impact on the environment. Many eco-conscious individuals and companies now offer sustainable, biodegradable, and reusable decorations made from natural materials or recycled materials. Soak the corn husks in water to make them pliable and easy to work with. This step prepares them for shaping and adhering to the wreath base. Make little folds on the ends of the strips that are not attached to the circle (just about 1/2 to 1 cm.) If you want to, you can add more details, like ribbon or fall berries. There are honestly so many different looks you can create with this one! Place a small object, such as a cotton ball, in the center of each piece of fabric, twist the fabric to cover the object, and then tie it closed with string. This will serve as the “head” of your fabric ghost.

If you can’t eat any leftover unopened sweets that you don’t want to eat, then consider how you can reduce food waste. Can you pass them on to someone via a food waste app like Olio? Or a local food bank? Have a think about how you can best pass these on to avoid waste.

Channel your artistic flair by drawing eyes and a mouth on the fabric, bringing your ghosts to life. Alternatively, you can cut out eyes and mouths using a different color of fabric and glue them on. Begin by gathering old sweaters (or other wool fabric) that you no longer wear or need. (You can also get some from the thrift shop if you don’t have any old ones you like.) Upcycling these materials reduces textile waste and embraces a sustainable approach.
