About this deal

Some people will advise you that if there are 2 or more actors speaking in the scene, then absolutely must record all dialogue from every actor. Why do I recommend you don’t move the boom from actor to actor unless you have to? As a filmmaker, I only need live audio if it syncs with the actor’s lips. Moving the boom mike can mean you miss part of this essential audio, if you don’t get the timing spot on. It can also mean the boom shadow moves across the frame and across the actors. There’s also a chance moving the boom can create a noise which ruins the audio. One option to consider for your landscape rake is a gauge wheel kit. The wheels allow you to control your rake depth to keep the rake from digging down to far over uneven terrain. Replacement tines are also available should you happen to break one. Cultivator Shotgun mics can be a great solution for eliminating unwanted ambient noise and using a boom arm means you’ll be able to get a great take without the need for any microphones or equipment to come into shot. If you’ve seen a picture of a film set which includes a boom operator, it might seem pretty simple and obvious. Just hold the boom so the mic points at the actor. What’s the big deal?

You might be thinking there is a physical difference between shotgun microphones and a boom mic but in reality, the difference is much more about the application rather than tonal or audio quality. A middle buster can also be used to trench a ditch for diverting water or even as a good start to a trench for electrical or water lines. It may only get you 10-12″ deep but by ripping the sod off and breaking up some of the subsoil it will make hand digging the rest of the trench much easier. If possible, hold your boom parallel to the floor and high above your head, using both arms at a similar, comfortable height. This will ensure it does not enter the corner of the camera's frame, which it could do if you were to hold the pole at a steep angle.

It's not a surprise that this boom pole made it to our list today. It's a highly popular choice on the market, it's been battle tested by many professionals, and does a phenomenal job as a compact pole. If you’re using a boom as well, you’ll likely need another set of hands to help out with the recording. Tighten the pole just enough to stop the sections moving and not too much so it’s a struggle to loosen them after. Holding and positioning You may also be surprised at where the best placement for that operator can be when shooting in unfamiliar or tight locations. I’ve had to stand below balconies while hanging the microphone above the parties on that same balcony, as there was no other access. It worked, but we needed a serious boom pole for that job. My favorite choice that I’ve been using for many years is the aforementioned Rode Boompole Pro. Thanks to the removable tip and separately available cable sets, the QP5100 can easily be configured for internal cabling, no soldering required.

You can see my Sennheiser 416 is mounted via plastic clips which are themselves suspended on rubber bands. I’ve had this for about 6 years and never had anything break or wear out. The system works very well. Booms are a commonly used piece of sound equipment that allow you to position the mic close to your subject while staying just out of shot. Though a number of factors may influence the limitations on mic placement potential (for example, the chosen camera frame and the overall design of the set), the overall preferred method is to boom from above, or below if absolutely necessary. You should never record from the sides.
