Fungus gnats can affect everything from succulents to tomato plants. They can also infect potting soil bags, which is a very common route of entry into your plants. Other likely targets are cucumbers and cultivated mushrooms. When conditions are favourable – in houses or warm greenhouses – breeding can take place all year round. Sciarid flies can occur all year round on protected herbs, especially in warm, moist conditions e.g. in propagation houses. However, they are more of a problem in spring and summer, when warm temperatures allow faster increase in numbers, especially when more frequent watering is needed, which favours development of the pest. The development time from egg to adult is around three weeks at 21°C, but faster at higher temperatures e.g. only 17 days at 25°C. Adult fungus gnats only live on liquids, and don’t actually do any damage to plants. Their presence is just very irritating. How to control sciarid flies affecting houseplants, terrarium plants, and glasshouse plants and seedlings The areas we observe high populations of sciarid are where the soil is kept moist or wet, especially in the top layer as the increase in moisture levels bring with it an increase in the development of fungi, which creates a more suitable environment for the adults to lay their eggs and the larvae to move more freely through the soil media. The nematodes can travel through the moist soil and locate the fungus gnat larvae. They then burrow inside and reproduce, killing the larvae and creating more nematodes to hunt down more larvae until none are left. Once the larvae are gone, the nematodes have no prey and naturally die out.

What are Sciarid Fly or Fungus Gnats?

Use in combination with Sciarid Nematodes – use nematodes to treat Sciarid Flies already present and then top with Sciarid Zoot Off to protect the plants from future infestations. They can be found hovering around your plant, or crawling over them. Indoors, you will notice a gnat slowly flying around the room. They’re attracted to light, as well as heat and scent. For this reason they may seem attracted to you as well.

Take approx 200ml (1/6th) of this concentrated solution and place in 2gall/10 litre watering can. Fill with water. Using a coarse rose apply to surface of 2.5sqm of compost.

Pot-bound plants that have filled the pot with roots are also thought to be more susceptible, so make sure you move them to larger pots as needed. I applied my Nemasys® Biological Fruit and Veg Protection treatment, on the 9th March 2019. On the 8th May 2019, I noticed a few sciarid flies inside a number of my terrariums. I must say that I haven’t seen any sciarid flies around any of my houseplants, as yet. At the moment, the sciarid flies inside my terrariums are not troublesome. So, I will leave things as they are for now. I will update this article, if I notice more sciarid flies inside my terrariums or if I find any sciarid flies around my houseplants, inside my home.
