About this deal

I have dark brown skin, curly hair, a broad nose, some of my ancestors were slaves and I have been detained by pasty white policemen in New Hampshire, Arizona and Georgia and so the society in which I live tells me I am black; that is my race. Though long skittish about Hollywood, with Erasure Everett trusted Jefferson to both adapt and direct one of his most challenging works. Du Bois asked, “What are Negroes to do when they are continually painted at their worst and judged by the public as they are painted? The jacket copy made each one sound great, blurbs from established literary icons told me why I should like it.

Wilson Harnet, Ailene Hoover, Thomas Tomad and Jon Paul Sigmarsen just looked at me, none of them speaking. For those unfamiliar with this author who appreciate character, plot and style, I urge you to dip your toe into his writing which in my opinion ranks with the best. Society erases these people from its collective consciousness (but not its unconsciousness, in which social anxiety without a name grows). Faced with years of disinterest in his latest manuscript, emotional turmoil erupts when he learns his sister was killed by abortion protestors.

Victims shouldn’t take them personally, contend the perpetrators; such behaviour is the consequence of multi-cultural society and must be tolerated. The story weaves his youth as a black man in America with his professional family in a most skilful and interesting way. It’s the story of Van Go Jenkins, tough-talking, 19-year-old father of four babies by four different mothers. In case you weren’t aware, the upcoming film AMERICAN FICTION is based on the source material of ERASURE. it's hard to discuss the novel without talking about its elaborate plot and book-within-a-book structure.

When Monk talks about Black people’s “potential,” Sintara grabs the word and flips it back on him, revealing the condescending attitude toward Black people that undergirds his frustration with racial stereotypes. Part farce, part realistic, this is one of the more unique stories I've read, but comes as little surprise given Percy's talent. This is the story of a black author, artist and intellectual who is greatly respected in small circles, yet has not (and does not seek) fame for his talents. Sadly, in these days of "civility" and identity politics, one can never read this piece too many times: http://gawker. I listen to Mahler, Aretha Franklin, Charlie Parker and Ry Cooder on vinyl records and compact discs. Black people have to be careful what they wish for when it comes to representation in popular culture. The parallel plots of Monk's mother being erased by Alzheimers, and the rewriting of family memories by the revelation of old secrets, work really well with Monk writing lies, creating a new persona, losing himself and the things that matter, having an identity imposed on him as per the opinions of mostly white liberal US media.

Erasure is a sly work, not easily described, though what it's for and what it's against are always clear. Everett] knows that trying to deny racial classification is hopeless; his awareness charges Erasure with both quixotic idealism and mordant resignation.Everett presents swathes of the paper on Barthes that Monk gives to the Nouveau Roman Society, with sample footnotes about hermeneutic codes.

As I read this book, each word, then each line, each sentence, each paragraph, each page, and finally each chapter, one after the other, started to unravel, and then to disappear from sight. The sharp satire on American publishers and American readers that Everett puts forward is delicious. A fan of the novel, I could spend time parsing all the differences between Erasure and American Fiction. We first meet the main character, Thelonious Ellison, aka Monk, a black English professor and author. Even if they don’t know him by name, they’ve certainly seen him represented in the hypermasculine swagger of hip-hop (and it’s easy enough to look up information on the character’s various iterations).People might already understand that, say, writing a negative review of Go Set a Watchman is NOT, in fact, tantamount to elder abuse*, because that's a term that means chaining your granny to the radiator, not doing your job as a reviewer by writing about a much-talked about piece of published fiction. Your dilemma is which to actually become, the stereotype figure people expect you to be, complete with a certain lingo and behavior, or a new and unique individual, trying to be simply yourself, free of all stereotypical behaviors, yet not trying to pass for white. An argument ensues with a white student, who walks out in protest when Ellison keeps the troublesome word on the board.
