About this deal

Please read our Privacy Statement for more information on our use and processing of your personal information. The distillery say 'Knockando possesses the classic elegance and complexity of the finest Speyside malts, with a unique delicacy and fruitiness. Time is another key element, as gentle maturation in oak casks slowly reveal the subtle aromas: delicate with a distinctive fresh almond note in its younger versions, it gains weight and depth of flavour over the years.

Meticulously aged for 12 years, Knockando 12 Year Old showcases the expertise and passion that have made this distillery a renowned name in the whisky world. The pale, golden colour of Knockando single malt whisky is entirely natural and derived solely from the casks in which it has matured – casks held together without nails or glue. So I decided I needed to sample some more Knockando and enjoyed it so much I actually got quite inebriated and started singing in the worst Scottish accent imaginable, I think I ended up getting asked to leave the pub by a rather burly bearded barman in a kilt, I stumbled home, stopping on the way at a takeaway to purchase a kebab with chilli sauce, which ended up in the gutter as being a bit worse for wear I had lost a lot of my hand/eye coordination and any sense of balance had also diminished. On the palate, the flavours unfold gracefully, revealing layers of smooth toffee, toasted almonds, and gentle spices.

Our latest catch up was after a recent visit to Johnnie Walker Land in Edinburgh where I picked up another bottle of the 12 years release.

Whisky historian, awards-panel judge, festival creator, events organiser and bespoke tour guide, Bonnie occasionally makes time to enjoy drinking whisky too! Background: The distillery of Knockando which in Gaelic means 'little black hill' lies in the heart of Speyside. Tasting Notes: Especially delicate, fruity and subtle Speyside: smooth but complex layers of flowery, nutty and slightly smoky notes. Only natural ingredients are used: malted barley, yeast and spring water from the nearby Cardnach spring. And so, as folk embark on this journey, they’re introduced to (relatively) affordable and risk free, core range expressions. Gone are the vintage declarations although the age statement still stands: matured for 12 years in ex-bourbon casks. The final result is a subtle, fruity single malt which bears all the hall marks of the finest Speyside malts. With a rich heritage dating back over a century, this single malt whisky exemplifies the distillery’s commitment to crafting exceptional spirits. And very soon, the need to move forward – to explore the realms of cask strength, non-chill filtration and naturally coloured – inevitably beckons. Together, with time, they create a delicate whisky with a distinctive fresh almond note in its younger versions that gains weight and depth of flavour over the years. One such old pal of mine – and the only ‘entry level’ expression in the whisky cupboard – is from the Evil Empire’s Knockando distillery. The name Knockando comes from the Gaelic `Cnoc-an-dhu`, meaning `little black hill`, which is thought to be a reference to the hills which lie in-between the site of the distillery.
