About this deal

In the absolutely packed Act II, the dark fantasy resumes and the Sandman expands into the French Revolution, ancient Rome, 19th-century San Francisco, eighth-century Baghdad, and beyond. There she is given the chance to undo her regrets and try out each of the other lives she might have lived.

Lucy Easthope is none of these things, but instead she is a leading authority on recovering from disaster. A former FBI hostage negotiator offers a new, field-tested approach to negotiating - effective in any situation. I think adding a chapter (or perhaps a second companion book) about how individuals cope, what the arc of experience might look like for survivors, and perhaps how to encourage governments/commniities to plan would be helpful. The book is actually a road-trip around most of the headline-grabbing disasters of the past couple of decades, the tsunami and 7/7 and Grenfell Tower and a last, rather provisional, chapter about global pandemic. This was an incredibly moving and informative look into disasters recovery, and how hope can be found in the darkest of times.Easthope talks about how her husband can be a great source of support, but also that she often just wants to hide under the covers and talk to no one. Michael Pollan, known for his best-selling nonfiction audio, including The Omnivores Dilemma and How to Change Your Mind, conceived and wrote Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World as an Audible Original. It is not always what you might think, and assumptions can and do lead to further smaller tragedies. With profound compassion and empathy throughout, the actual work undertaken knowing what they are handling is chilling.

She is also honest, starting the book talking about her shape being “round” as she had struggled with fertility, and at the end talking about her reaction to her husband’s illness. Her ongoing concern for those who died and those who survived does not ignore the politics or incompetence but focuses on the impact on people which, as she points out, we shall be living with for a very long time. She challenges others to think differently about what comes next after tragic events, and how to plan for future ones. She has been involved in some of the world's most infamous disasters whether caused by malignant humans or mother nature!

I was drawn to this book because it's an intriguing topic which is rarely discussed in public, and I wanted to learn more.In Baldwin’s spirit, the faithful knows that this moment of life is brief, and that death is as sure as the morning, and that what awaits us at the end of those words is that present and defiant joy that is heard in the words of Jesus: I have come that they may have life and life to the full. Of course, things don’t always work out the way they are planned for, and the author identifies where mistakes were made.

After a disaster, someone has to figure out where to put the bodies, how to identify the dead, what to do with little personal momentoes, how to help the community response. At the core of her job is a “process known as Disaster Victim Identification, which involves painstaking analysis by pathologists, anthropologists and odontologists to append a name to flesh, bone and teeth”. These boxes might contain anything from a charred passport or a wedding band to the wrapper from a packet of mints.Readers of my blog will know that one of my brothers died from Sudden Adult Death aged 34 years old in 2009. She has been at the centre of the most seismic events of the last few decades, advising on everything from the 2004 tsunami and the 7/7 bombings to the Grenfell fire and the war in Ukraine.
