About this deal

Years later, someone gifted us a game of Hoot Owl Hoot!, a cooperative board game with much the same concept but with a decidedly more whimsical theme. Instead of people going up against systems of oppression, players are adorable owl children playing against the sunrise. The game, which features attractive, bold graphics, is young kid-friendly but still fun for older kids and adults. In the game, a little family of owls has to fly home before the sun rises. There’s no way to know for sure, but if you want to find out more about these little creatures then keep reading! Unlike some games that add additional rules or mechanics to increase difficulty, Gnomes at Night only does this with more complex mazes. Because of this, the game play can get a little stale with older gamers. Still fun, but ultimately you are doing the same thing as board A, just with a higher difficulty level. Because gnomes are hard workers and have plenty of energy, they like to find ways to help their human friends or alternatively drive them crazy by shifting things about; lost car keys, missing pens and schoolwork that suddenly appear after you have given up are signs that a gnome is displeased with you. The history of these little fellas began in Germany in the 1840s where Phillip Griebel created terracotta statues of them for sale at his pottery shop. It didn’t take long before other potteries across Europe began making their own versions, which were typically bearded men wearing pointy red hats, brandishing lanterns and pipes. It draws an image which we still recognize today. Gnomes are Beloved by Children and Adults alike.

Gnomes are small (about three inches tall), round-headed creatures with long, pointed noses and pointy hats. They live in gardens all over the world, but mostly in Europe where they were first created during the Renaissance period. Gnomes involve themselves in human affairs, helping them mend, clean and grow their flowers and vegetables if the humans are virtuous, If not, the gnomes will spend many hours creating havoc with hidden items and general disarray. Each game is made up of three rounds. At the beginning of the round, each player faces one side of the board. Draw a Corner Start Card and each player directs their Magnetic Gnome Marker to that corner so that the magnets in the markers connect with the board between them. Start the timer and then flip over the first Treasure Card. The treasure should appear on one side of the board and players must communicate with each other to guide their connected Gnome Markers through the maze to get to the treasure. These players start in corner two and will be looking for a Treasure Map. Photo by Elizabeth MacAndrew. The game lasts three rounds, or about 15 minutes total. Players can shuffle the treasure cards, change boards, or switch sides between rounds for an added challenge. This makes for fun and unique gameplay eachtime you break this game out of the closet. Each player on that team chooses one color for the entire game. This color indicates when it is that player's turn based on the team colors shown on the treasure card. Of course, Peaceable Kingdoms targeted Gnomes at Night to a younger age demographic, so this isn’t a huge problem. They’ve done an excellent job here making a game that adults and older children are happy to play, and with a 10 minute play time, no one will feel left out for long. Gnomes have been around for hundreds of years and no one really knows where they came from or why people started making them. Some people think that they might be magical creatures who grant wishes to people who put food in their mouths. The game can also work for three or four players, using the included “team cards,” but Gnomes at Night works best as a two-player game. Gnomes at Night is a cooperative maze game for 2-4 players ages 6+ that takes about 15 minutes to play. In the game, you take on the role of gnomes trying to hunt down treasures for the Queen in a maze. Gnomes at Night Components ‘Gnomes at Night’ components. Photo by Elizabeth MacAndrew.

They exchange details of their day, talk about things at their respective houses, discuss issues in the neighborhood, and so forth. Once they’ve finished their tasks, the gnomes will retreat underground in their secret cave concealed to humans. Garden Gnomes – These gnomes can be found as either decorative lawn ornaments or smaller gnomes that hide or camouflage themselves in the garden during the day and come out at night. They tend to the garden. Their cave is far from luxurious, but it is comfy enough for the gnomes. Here, they gather their provisions and have a feast. Each side of the game board has a different maze layout, with six pieces of treasure scattered throughout. Players navigate the maze with two plastic gnome figurines, whose magnetic bottoms attract through the board and keep them in place, even when you let go. We seem to have a thing for games with vertical boards lately. Maybe because they foster a different kind of cooperation and make it easy for spectators to feel like they are involved in the gameplay. Gnomes at Night is another example what a clever designer can do with a vertical game board. Setup Gnomes are beloved by children and adults alike. These little guys are known for their love of fishing, gardening, and having a good time. The maze, aka the game board, is held in place vertically by two posts that attach to the base of the box. Setup is simple, but younger players may need an adult’s help to get the posts attached correctly. There are four different game boards (A, B, C, and D) to choose from, and each one gets increasingly harder. The game is designed for ages 6 and up, but even adults may find board D to be a fun challenge.

The most common question asked about garden gnomes is “what do they do at night?” A lot of people would like to think that at night garden gnomes come alive and start doing fun things around the garden. The truth is that they don’t move at all. Garden gnomes stand still in your garden watching over it until you move them. Once a Gnome Marker touches a treasure, draw a card for the next one. Players continue to cooperatively get the treasures until the Sand Timer runs out or the 12 treasures are found. At the end of the round, total up how many treasures you found and award your team with that many points—12 points are possible for a round, with a total of 36 possible for a three-round game. Then reshuffle the 12 Treasure Cards and the Corner Start Cards and repeat for two more rounds. Gnomes are linked strongly to horses in mythology, and farmers could tell if the ‘tomte’ favored a particular horse by its gleaming coat and bountiful health. Tomte also favored farmers who paid them respect and often stole from surrounding farms to enhance the favored farmer’s prosperity.Queen Benevolence is hosting a celebration to honor her loyal subjects. To thank them, she will give away 12 extraordinary items from her treasure box that she keeps hidden away in a secret chamber in the castle. Draw the top corner start card and place both movers in the corner of the game board indicated by the card - 1, 2, 3, or 4. If for any reason you drop a mover during play, turn over the next corner start card and place the movers in the corner indicated on the card. But when the Queen goes to choose the items that she wants to bestow, she discovers the box is empty! A thief has stolen her treasures and is running away with them!
