No, I’ve learned how to do that down the years. I didn’t know how to write a novel when I wrote Trainspotting. I had these loose stories that seemed to be heading somewhere; the start was going on too much about how they became junkies, so I cut it and went straight into their world and ended it with a heist ending I thought would be dramatic. Then I went on to The Acid House – more stories. Marabou Stork Nightmares was my first attempt at a conventional novel but it turned out quite experimental. I was just messing around in those first few books. They were probably the best ones, because then you learn how to write and you end up writing like everybody else [laughs]. Welsh's novels share characters, giving the feel of a "shared universe" within his writing. For example, characters from Trainspotting make cameo appearances in The Acid House, Marabou Stork Nightmares, Ecstasy, Filth, and slightly larger appearances in Glue, whose characters then appear in Porno. Welsh returned to Edinburgh in the late 1980s, where he worked for the city council in the housing department. He then studied for an MBA at Heriot-Watt University. [4] Fiction [ edit ] Irvine Welsh in Warsaw, 13 March 2006 I’d never talk about the worst thing I’ve ever done. There are things you’ve done you feel uncomfortable talking about, and there are things you’ve done that are hurtful and beyond the pale. When your behaviour has occasioned distress in people who have put trust in you, that’s the worst thing you can do.” Theatre". Irvine Welsh. The Random House Group Limited. Gradually, common themes emerge. Ecstasy is a collection of three short love stories by Irvine Welsh. Not love stories in the classical sense, more love stories for the modern, ecstasy fuelled, party age. The kind of love stories where the characters are heavily flawed and you aren't sure if their love will last, or even if they were really in love to begin with. Before I go, I ask if this is really the final Trainspotting book. He looks astonished at the suggestion. Then he remembers his own words. “Did I say that? I probably did say that, didn’t I? I might change my mind already. Yeah. There will be another one.”

Sam Leith (14 April 2012). "Life choice". The Financial Times. The Financial Times Limited. Archived from the original on 18 July 2012 . Retrieved 29 July 2012. Ecstasy is comprised of three short stories, all in relation to chemical romances and relationships. This is the only vein running through the three; they are incredibly unlike each other, and all brought something original to the table.Probably what might have been is that it might’ve been shite. I can’t think of a working-class British writer who’s done massively well out of winning the Booker prize; it didn’t do [James] Kelman much good. Welsh co-directed "The Right to liberty", a chapter of the documentary film The New Ten Commandments, in 2008.

I tend to use humour to give the reader a break. If you’re forcing people to look at potentially intolerable material, you have to give them space to reset; you can show as much darkness as possible as long as you’re groping in some ways for the light switch. guidelines unless otherwise stated. With this in mind, we ask you to use your judgement in regards to a His next book, Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance (1996), became his most high-profile work since Trainspotting, released in the wave of publicity surrounding the film. It consists of three unconnected novellas: the first, Lorraine Goes To Livingston, is a bawdy satire of classic British romance novels, the second, Fortune's Always Hiding, is a revenge story involving thalidomide and the third, The Undefeated, is a sly, subtle romance between a young woman dissatisfied with the confines of her suburban life and an aging clubgoer. Murphy, Claire (13 January 2009). "Author can't find buyer for his Dublin home". Evening Herald. Archived from the original on 18 April 2022 . In teoria picchio, minaccio e faccio stragi. In pratica sono portata a cercare di comprendere, anche qualche volta a comprendere che qualcuno faccia schifo - non la maggior parte di noi, per fortuna.
