About this deal

Jules wrote: milojthatch, do you think there is any chance for non-Americans to acquire this DVD? Maybe some obscure online retailer that happens to carry it? Since its release, Song of the South has become increasingly controversial. Many argue that the movie perpetuates racist stereotypes and romanticizes the antebellum South. As a result, Disney has never released the film on home video in the United States. In 2003, the Online Film Critics Society ranked the film as the 67th greatest animated film of all time. kylemj wrote:It seems Disney does turn a blind eye on this. They're too scared to release it themselves but dont mind because its out there for people to "obtain" and seeing as it hasn't been released its not like they're losing money by people obtaining it illegaly since no genuine copy is available Parsons, Luella (February 28, 1960). "That Little Girl in 'Song of the South' a Big Girl Now". Lincoln Sunday Journal and Star . Retrieved September 2, 2008.Appreciating the work of countless Disney animators, musicians, and artists that worked on the this film and being aware of the fact that this film sanitizes a horrific reality to turn it into a musical fantasy are not mutually exclusive. The thing is, the harder they try to bury this movie, the more attention it receives. If they had just released the thing many years ago and slapped a "this is not PC" intro to it and then pulled it after just a year or so and then never released it again, it would have received a lot less fanfare and could have actually been buried a long time ago. By not only not releasing it, but making a big deal about it, they bring a lot more attention to this film.

Song of the South Memorabilia". Song of the South.net. Archived from the original on February 13, 2007 . Retrieved January 18, 2007. I finally talked the the gentlemen behind this particular DVD release of Song of the South. Due to my promise to him, he shall remain nameless, but I will share what he told me. First off, not surprisingly, this is not an authorized copy of the film. Second, this release is not just sold via the Uncle Remus Museum as an exclusive, but can be found all over Mississippi, Georgia and Alabama. In 1946, a Giant Golden Book entitled Walt Disney's Uncle Remus Stories was published by Simon & Schuster. It featured 23 illustrated stories of Br'er Rabbit's escapades, all told in a Southern dialect based on the original Joel Chandler Harris stories. Disney historian Jim Korkis, in his 2012 book Who's Afraid of Song of the South, alleged that White and June Blythe, the director of the American Council on Race Relations, were denied requests to see a treatment for the film. [11] When the film was first released, White telegraphed major newspapers around the country with the following statement, erroneously claiming that the film depicted an antebellum setting: Without spoiling too much, I enjoyed the animation, the acting was fine and the ending pleasantly surprised me.Br'er Rabbit, Br'er Fox, and Br'er Bear also appeared in the 2011 video game Kinect: Disneyland Adventures for the Xbox 360. The game is a virtual recreation of Disneyland and it features a mini game based on the Splash Mountain attraction. Br'er Rabbit helps guide the player character through that game, while Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear serve as antagonists. The three Br'ers also appear as meet-and-greet characters in the game, outside Splash Mountain in Critter Country. In the game, Jess Harnell reprises his role from the attraction as Br'er Rabbit and also takes on the role of Br'er Fox, while Br'er Bear is voiced by James Avery, who previously voiced Br'er Bear and Br'er Frog in the Magic Kingdom version of Splash Mountain. This is the Br'ers' first major appearance in Disney media and their first appearance as computer-generated characters. The 2019 season of film historian Karina Longworth’s must-hear podcast series “You Must Remember This” took listeners on a deep dive into the saga of Disney’s most controversial movie, “Song of the South.” (As a testament to Longworth’s range, this season, she’s set to explore the erotic thrillers of the 1980s and ’90s.) As Walt Disney Studios continues to roll out its vast library of titles on the Disney+ streaming service, one of them is missing, and it’s the 1946 Uncle Remus adaptation with confused racial optics.

Let the Rain Pour Down": (uptempo) Written by Ken Darby and Foster Carling; performed by the Hall Johnson Choir I keep reading on here about the MILLIONS of Poor AMERICAN slaves this movie insults... I have to wonder if those statements are made from ignorance or from a place of greed and malice? In 1986, Floyd Norman wrote A Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah Christmas! featuring Uncle Remus and Br'er Rabbit as that year's annual Disney Christmas Story newspaper comic strip. [35] When the Christmas Story strips were reprinted in the 2017 collection Disney's Christmas Classics, this story was omitted—the only deletion in an otherwise complete run of the strip. A good friend of mine in California, went to the San Diego Comic-Con last year and said that there were tons of movies that have never seen the light of day in any form of video, Bets, VHS, DVD or whatever.

In addition to concerns about his racial stereotyping, Reymond had never written a screenplay before (nor would he write another). Maurice Rapf, who had been writing live-action features at the time, was asked by Walt Disney Productions to work with Reymond and co-writer Callum Webb to turn the treatment into a shootable screenplay. [12] According to Neal Gabler, one of the reasons Disney had hired Rapf to work with Reymond was to temper what Disney feared would be Reymond's "white Southern slant".
