John Sweeney said, “ The grim shadow Robert Maxwell cast over people, above all his favourite child, Ghislaine, has long fascinated me. It was a privilege to be able to tell that story to listeners for Global and The Story Lab, working with Chalk & Blade. I could not be more thrilled that a company with the profile, expertise and stellar slate of Eleventh Hour Films now want to make a TV series based on our podcast.” In a sense they were made for each other. He was the powerful male figure, and key to a life of luxury, that she had lost when Robert Maxwell went overboard. She had a Rolodex of connections – not least Prince Andrew, who could provide the shady financier with a veneer of social respectability and cachet. Chris Baughen, Managing Editor for Global Player said: “As her story continues to unfold almost daily, John Sweeney’s brilliant dissection of Ghislaine Maxwell’s life so far has gripped listeners. As the podcast industry continues to thrive and experience incredible growth, it’s fantastic to see a Global original podcast adapted into visual content.”

Please review ourAs Epstein’s girlfriend, his alleged pimp and partner in a series of sex crimes Ghislaine has remained in the shadows. When Epstein’s life began to unravel, Ghislaine vanished, only to reappear when she was arrested by the FBI last year. She denies six charges of enticing young girls for sex with Epstein and perjury. LBC's critically acclaimed, chart-topping true-crime podcast ‘Hunting Ghislaine’ is set to be adapted for the small screen. Robert Maxwell's luxury yacht, the Lady Ghislaine. Multi-millionaire Maxwell probably plunged to his death from the yacht.

Hunting Ghislaine is an investigation into the story of Ghislaine Maxwell, a British socialite who is currently in jail, awaiting trial for helping Jeffrey Epstein and others exploit underage girls. Jeffrey Pagliuca, one of Ghislaine Maxwell’s defence team, arrives at court in Manhattan, 10 December 2021. Photograph: Carlo Allegri/ReutersWhen Robert Maxwell drowned, some speculated that he was pushed, others that he killed himself, and yet others that he was simply peeing overboard and lost his balance. “I think he was murdered,” Ghislaine told reporters. That theory was based on the idea that Robert was bumped off by Mossad because he knew too much. Sweeney’s strengths as a reporter show themselves in his account of Maxwell’s trial, forensically detailing the abuse that occurred at Epstein’s numerous properties, the degree of her complicity in the crimes, and the cruelty in her denials – effectively making the victims suffer twice over, in having to relive their abuse in court. His thesis is that Maxwell’s father was a “monster” (he uses the word repeatedly to establish his case, only occasionally swapping over to “ogre”), and so was Epstein, and in her desire to please these two demanding men, she lost sight of all other meaningful considerations – not least the wellbeing of the young women she lured into Epstein’s corrupting company. Every now and then, reporters go to hellish places - I’ve stepped unwittingly in other people’s blood from the Romanian revolution in 1989 to the Bataclan in 2015 – but listening to a host of “nubiles” claiming sexual abuse by Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell was grim indeed. Epstein is dead but Maxwell is very much alive and denies everything.

Detained, tortured, stabbed, and sentenced to death. This is Aiden Aslin’s astonishing story, from the heart of the conflict in Ukraine. Aiden fought with the Ukrainians and was captured by Russian forces during the siege of Mariupol. After a normal childhood in Nottinghamshire and ambitions to be a policeman, how did he find himself a prisoner of war? And how did he survive it?Hunting Ghislaine, by the investigative journalist John Sweeney, is based on Sweeney’s popular 2020 podcast of the same name. It’s a story with which we are all familiar – overly familiar, perhaps – but while Sweeney draws copiously on the extensive reporting done by others, his book, carefully researched and written in a breezy journalese, casts new light on the complex character of Ghislaine Maxwell and her fateful relationships with Epstein and her father. As for Maxwell, Sweeney muses on the impact of adoring and being adored by her father Robert, who owned and plundered the Daily Mirror. Ghislaine was raised in a life of privilege at the 51-room Headington Hill Hall near Oxford, where her father had himself memorialised in stained glass as Samson bringing down the walls of Gaza. We learn from Hunting Ghislaine that he would urinate from his helipad atop the Daily Mirror building on to people below. He behaved worse in his office. “Maxwell also had the habit, common to megalomaniacs, of crapping in front of people. Perhaps not visibly doing it, but going to the loo with people waiting so would have to listen to him evacuating – whatever you want to call it.” John Sweeney: ‘biting, morally informed character assessments’. Photograph: Antonio Olmos/The Observer Now, though, Sweeney seems professionally rejuvenated. He recently published Murder on the Malta Express: Who Killed Daphne Caruana Galizia? – an investigation into the murder of the Mediterranean island’s leading journalist. He is writing a fifth novel. His fourth, The Useful Idiot, was set in Stalinist Russia and included a diabolical character called Cornelius Aubyn. As the first and last three letters of the name suggest, this was a dig at the former Labour leader.

The story of Jeffrey Epstein has been told in many ways over the past two years, but none have given more than a few cursory moments to Ghislaine Maxwell. His girlfriend, his alleged pimp and partner in a series of sex crimes against a series of underage women, some as young as 14, Ghislaine has remained in the shadows. When Epstein’s life began to unravel, Ghislaine vanished, only to reappear when she was arrested by the FBI earlier this year. Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, speaks during a news conference to announce charges against Ghislaine Maxwell for her alleged role in the sexual exploitation and abuse of multiple minor girls by Jeffrey Epstein. Paula Cuddy, Creative Director and Executive Producer for Eleventh Hour Films, said: “John’s compelling podcast ‘Hunting Ghislaine’ puts Ghislaine Maxwell centre stage, unravels her story and asks what went wrong for the girl who seemingly had it all. Set in a richly glittering international world, dark secrets are revealed and always in the shadows looms the formative relationship between a daughter and her father. It has all the hallmarks of a premium drama - and with John alongside our partners at Global and The Story Lab we look forward to delivering.” His girlfriend, his alleged pimp and partner in a series of sex crimes against a series of underage women, some as young as 14, Ghislaine has remained in the shadows. For me, it is the little details that are most telling. Epstein, we learn, decorated the entrance hall of his New York townhouse with rows of individually framed prosthetic eyeballs. We hear a recording of a prosecutor asking Epstein if it’s true he has an egg-shaped penis, followed by the financier ripping off his mic and storming out of the deposition.
